SOUTH AUSTRALIA is on the verge of something truly great in Motorsport.
In Nick Percat, Tim Slade and Todd Hazelwood the state has three high profile representatives at the top of Supercars competition.
The Adelaide 500 remains the premier Touring Car race in the country, with government support and continued fan and commercial patronage.
In The Bend Motorsport Park, the state will soon have arguably the best motorsport complex in Australia, giving us world-class facilities and stimulating the local scene even more.
Mallala is under new management; the Adelaide Motorsport Festival is growing and the sport has a higher profile than ever: Never before has there been more private and public investment, both financial and otherwise, in the sport in this state.
Our karting landscape is vibrant with a host of young and talented individuals waiting in the wings to strut their stuff on the national landscape.
South Australia also has remarkable heritage in the sport dating back to the Grands Prix at Port Wakefield, Lobethal and Nuriootpa, legends like Vern Schuppan and the early days of racing at Mallala – and so much more.
The time is now to step up and find the next group of young drivers who can represent the state both here and abroad in the future.
That’s what this plan is all about. By developing an avenue where young drivers can be spotted, developed, educated and supported at an early stage in their racing journey we hope to be able to be at least the first cog in the chain that will see our next generation of South Australian racing stars.
If we can find one or two drivers each season that have the requsite skill, attitude and attributes that mark them a potential champion then it is our job to grab them and push them on the way up the ladder.
With the support of our local industry and the people within, there lies a real opportunity to give them that critical first ‘leg up’ without them having to mortgage the house to do so.
At the very least it will push them into the spotlight and give them the opportunity to make people – influential or otherwise – aware of what they’re doing.
At the very best we’ll be able to grow a group of likeminded individuals within the state that can grab the next talented superstar-in-waiting and arm them with the tools they need to become our next champion.
That’s what this is all about.. it should be a fun ride!.
